As the USDA’s Food Data Central shows, yellow summer offers an array of nutrients, including:

  • 1.01g of Protein
  • 2.88g of Sugar
  • 1g of Dietary Fiber
  • 20. mg of Magnesium
  • 222mg of Potassium
  • 0.29mg of Zinc
  • 0.44mg Iron
  • 32mg of Phosphorus 

Thanks to the small but bioavailable amounts of essential nutrients, such as zinc, iron and magnesium, yellow squash can contribute to the overall well-being of your goats. 

Furthermore, the juicy nature of this veggie also helps keep your goats hydrated, especially during hot weather! Yellow squash, along with watermelon, is one of our preferred treats to offer our trip of goats on dry summer days.  

However, because of its almost complete lack of fiber, yellow squash cannot and should never be anything more than a treat for your goats. Remember, goats require large quantities of coarse, fibrous plant material to drive their ruminant digestive system! We are talking unlimited hay and high quality, green forage.

Remember, yellow squash should complement a well-rounded diet that includes hay, foraged greens, and other essential nutrients from grains or goat-specific feeds. 

While yellow squash contains vitamins and minerals that will benefit your goat’s digestive, immune, and metabolic health in small amounts, large quantities will result in painful bloating and potential constipation or diarrhea. 

For this reason, we do not offer more than one yellow squash to each goat per day. Too much of a good thing can upset their delicate digestive system, so treat them to yellow squash in reasonable portions!

When we prepare yellow squash for our goats, we do the following:

  1. Wash the squash thoroughly to remove any dirt or chemicals.
  2. Slice it into manageable pieces that your goats can munch on comfortably. You can offer the squash raw or lightly steamed – whichever way they prefer. 
  3. Mix the squash slices in with a bucket of feed or solo for your goats to enjoy
  4. Remove any leftover slices at the end of the day, fresh squash is quick to mold! 

Remember, introducing new foods gradually is important to avoid any tummy troubles. Keep an eye on their reactions and adjust the serving size accordingly.

We offer our goats unlimited amounts of hay year round, keep them on a rotating pasture for foraging, and always supplement their winter diets with grains and small amounts of sweet feeds
