Can Goats Eat Raisins? Truth Behind The Sweet Treat

Raisins are a family favorite here at Hobby Farm Heaven, we love to put them in our oatmeal, yogurt, and especially in cookies!

And when it comes to our curious caprine companions, goats, it’s natural to wonder about their dietary preferences. We enjoy offering our goats treats from time to time, but one question often arises: Can goats eat raisins too?

Join us as we explore the world of goats and raisins, and discover whether this sweet delight is a suitable indulgence for our hoofed friends.

Can Goats Eat Raisins As Treats

Goats are known for their varied and adventurous palates. But this doesn’t mean everything they are curious about, or enjoy the taste of, is healthy for them.

Yes, goats can eat raisins, but when it comes to these dried fruits, moderation is key

Because of their high sugar content and dense energy, it’s important to offer raisins in small quantities and as an occasional treat rather than a regular part of your goats’ diet.

Nutritional Information: Raisins For Goats

Raisins are simply dried grapes, and grapes are one of the most sugary fruits out there, so it stands to reason that raisins contain about 50g of sugars per 100g serving!

This is a ton of sugar, and no goat (or human) should eat 100g of raisins in one sitting. But hidden within their sweet and chewy nature, raisins also offer a surprising 6.8g of fiber

This is more than many other fruit treats out there and means that raisins can aid in healthy digestion for our goat friends.

Additionally, raisins contain minerals like potassium and iron, which are beneficial for goats’ overall well-being.

Are Raisins Too Sugary For Goats

As anything other than a treat food, yes, raisins are too sugary for goats.

Remember, while raisins offer some nutritional benefits, it’s essential to be mindful of their extremely high sugar content. A sudden influx of sugary foods can result in painful bloating, indigestion, and rumen bacterial upset for your goats.

Too much sugar in a goat’s diet can also lead to weight gain, dental issues, and bad eating habits. Therefore, it’s crucial to keep raisin intake limited to small quantities!

Are Raisins Toxic To Goats

There is a compound found naturally in raisins called tartaric acid, which is also present in grapes, currants, tamarinds, and cream of tartar.

Tartaric acid is well-known for causing renal (kidney) failure in dogs and even in some cats and ferrets.

However, we haven’t been able to find any evidence that the same is true for goats. That said, we have never offered our goats large quantities (more than half a handful) of raisins at one time.

But it is never a bad idea to chat with your local vet to get their expert advice and opinion before you offer a new snack or treat food to your goats!

So How Often Can Goats Eat Raisins

As mentioned earlier, moderation is key.

Goats can enjoy raisins as an occasional treat, but it’s best to limit their intake to a few raisins (half a handful) a couple of times a week.

This ensures they receive the nutritional benefits without going overboard on the sugar or encountering potential digestive issues.

Remember, variety is important in a goat’s diet, as is high fiber, so make sure to always have hay and forage plant material available to them!

Can Baby Goats Eat Raisins

Yes, any goat that is either fully weaned or mostly weaned can eat raisins without issues.

We define mostly weaned as receiving more than two thirds of its daily nutrition from foodstuffs other than mother’s milk.

Remember: it’s crucial to introduce new items to your goats in moderation and ensure they receive, first and foremost, a balanced diet of highly fibrous hay and forage plant materials.

Our Best Tips For Giving Goats Raisins

We like to mix in the raisins we offer our goats with a less sugary treat such as cucumber or zucchini, or even mix raisins in with a bucket of hay, so that our goats are ingesting dense fibers alongside the raisins.

We also never offer our goats cooked foods or breads that contain raisins, mostly because these foods have added sugars on top of the natural sugars in raisins and can more easily upset goats’ digestive systems and encourage bad eating habits.

Finally, we always rotate and switch up the treats we offer our trip of goats. One day will be half a handful of raisins, the next will be fibery gourds, or cabbage!

We think this is a great practice and ensures our goats have a wide variety of nutrients and flavors to enjoy.

Can Goats Eat Currents?

Absolutely! Currants, whether black, red, or white, are simply small raisins from a certain type of grape. They also contain dietary fiber, vitamins, and minerals that can support a goat’s overall health.

Can Pygmy Goats Eat Raisins?

Yes, pygmy goats can eat raisins in moderation. Just remember to keep the portion sizes small and monitor their intake to avoid any potential digestive issues or excessive sugar intake.

Can Goats Eat Raisin Bran?

No, we do not recommend offering raisin bran to your goats. This cereal is simply too processed to make it anything of value to your goats.

Our best advice is to stick to raw, fresh treats and snacks for your goats.

This video touches more on the sugar and fiber content of raisins, and how the body digests them!

Final Thoughts On Can Goats Eat Raisins

While goats can indeed enjoy the occasional nibble of raisins, it’s important to exercise caution and moderation.

Raisins can provide some nutritional benefits to goats, but their high sugar content necessitates careful monitoring of your goat’s intake.

Remember, a healthy and balanced diet is crucial for your goats’ overall well-being. So, treat your caprine friends with love, but keep their health in mind when sharing the sweet delight of raisins and always offer them lots of high fibers, such as hay!
