Can Goats Eat Deer Corn?

Can Goats Eat Deer Corn Safely?

The first winter we raised goats on our hobby farm, there was a huge snow storm and we fell short of food for our herd. Luckily, I found an extra bag of deer corn in our barn and was able to keep them fed until we could get out to the local feed store.

That’s right, goats can eat deer corn. However, we would never recommend offering your goats large amounts of deer corn, or making any type of corn a primary part of their winter or summer diet.

What Kind Of Corn Do You Feed Goats

Lots of goat owners and hobby farmers wonder if corn is a suitable addition to their goats’ diets.

While goats are natural foragers and can consume a variety of foods, it’s crucial to know that the primary component of their diet year round must be fibrous plant material, such as hay.

That said, corn is a high energy food that can be beneficial during winter months when other foraging material is short.

But, what kind of corn should you feed your goats?

Well, the most common type of corn you can safely offer your goats is field corn. Field corn is the kind of corn used for animal feed and industrial purposes, and it includes what is commonly called “deer corn”.

Field or deer corn is different from sweet corn, which is the variety humans typically enjoy on the cob, and sweet feed, which is a molasses coated grain blend for goats.

Can You Feed Shelled Corn To Goats

Yes, goats can eat shelled corn.  Shelled corn refers to corn kernels with the outer husk removed; this actually makes it easier for your goats to digest.

Many goat owners, including ourselves, choose shelled corn as it saves time during feeding and minimizes wastage. Just ensure that the shelled corn is free from any mold or contaminants, as spoiled corn can be harmful to your goats’ health!

Cracked Vs. Whole Corn For Goats

When it comes to feeding corn to goats, you may come across both cracked and whole corn options. But what is the difference between these two types of corn?

The difference is that cracked corn has been mechanically processed to break the corn kernels into smaller pieces. On the other hand, whole corn retains its original kernel size.

Cracked Corn For Goats

We recommend offering only cracked kernel corn to your goats.

We’ve heard of too many goat farmers that have injured their goat’s jaws or teeth on whole kernels, or who have had goats that struggle to digest whole kernel corn.

Moreover, cracked corn allows goats to extract more nutrients efficiently, enhancing the overall nutritional value of their diet.

Can Goats Have Corn On The Cob

No, we don’t recommend offering your goats corn on the cob.

We actually shy away from offering our goats any cooked food, as the natural chemical changes that occur during heating can make foods harder to digest and degrade the nutrient content available to goats.

Even when raw, the corn cob isn’t edible and will just decay in your goats’ paddock, encouraging mold and bacteria growth.

In addition, the corn cob can pose a choking hazard and may lead to digestive problems. Stick to offering shelled or cracked corn instead to ensure the safety and well-being of your goats.

Can Baby Goats Eat Corn

The diets of baby goats, also known as kids, differ slightly from adult goats.

Any nursing kid should not be fed corn, as their four stomachs are still developing the capacity to digest raw plant material and corn would be too much of a stress to their digestive system.

Once a kid is fully weaned, corn should be introduced gradually and in moderation. Young  goats can have sensitive digestive systems, and an abrupt change in their diet can lead to health issues.

We always suggest consulting with your local veterinarian to determine the appropriate feeding regimen for your baby or immature goats!

What Is The Best Feed For Goats

While corn can be part of a goat’s diet, it should not be the sole feed. Too much corn can result in acidosis (grain-poisoning)
